I have a 2000 F250 5.4L V8 that recently began idling high. The first time it did it, when I put it in park, it climbed to 2000 rpm and stayed there. If I revved it up, it would very slowly drop back down to 2000 rpm again. Now it idles at 1200-1500 rpm. Does anyone have an idea where to begin on this one???
Any help would be appreciated, thank you in advance.
But really, I don't know if this will help at all, but here it is: My girlfriend's ranger used to rev up real high - 2000-2500 right after start-up, then would slowly settle back down to norm. idle speed. It was also a little rough at times. So we spent a few bucks and got new spark plugs, put them in and no more probs. Starts at and remains at normal idle, perfectly smooth. Just a thought.
Thanks for the suggestion, but I only have 50k miles on the motor, and changed the plugs about 15k ago. The 1st time it started idling high, I had been driving on the interstate for about 25 miles and it happened after that, so the engine was definitely warmed up....
I guess it could be the Throttle Position Sensor that's dying or the Idle Air Control valve that is stuck open. (That is if you have already eliminated the possiblity of the throttle sticking and not returning to idle position.)
Thanks for the suggestions. It doesn't seem like a stuck throttle, as the rpms will climb on their own without me touching the gas while in park. I also do not think its the IAC, as I had issues with that previously and replaced it some time ago, and these are different symptoms.
Throttle Position Sensor or a vacuum leak sounds like it could be it. Is it possible to diagnose the sensor without taking it into a shop? And where is it located? I'll check out the manifold after work today...
UPDATE: On Friday afternoon (5 days after it started idling high), I cranked her up and she's been idling fine ever since. Dunno what it was, but all seems OK now. Thanks for your help
Hope you don't mind me jumping in here but I'm having this same problem except I have 99 F250SD with a V10 and a manual tranny. Mine has been idling at 1500 and it will surge up and down from that a couple hunderd rpm's. I installed a new iac last night and now it seems to hang up at 1500 for a while, 1 or 2 seconds, then drop to about 1000 rpm which I believe is still a bit high. What is normal idle rpms for the V10? And I was also wondering about the throttle position sensor, where is it and can it be tested? I'll have to check for an intake leak. I have only had the truck less then a year and put on 10000 or so miles, now has 82000 total, so I don't know if it has had the plugs changed or what any other maintnence its ever had.

Yes, check for an intake leak. Mine was on the hose for the EGR valve on the right side of the engine where it has a 90 degree elbow turn. It was producing the same effect as yours.
Well then 1000 rpm it is. By the time I got home tonight , about 25miles, it was running good. RPM's were dropping to 800 to 1000 with little to no delay. Maybe the computer needs time to catch up to the new IAC motor?? Hopefully the problem is solved
*ahem*....I have a '99 F-250 4X4 SD 5.4 Triton STD Trans. 162,000 miles with a high idle problem. I have replaced 2 speed sensors (Bank 1 & 2), the oxygen sensor, EGR valve, TPS, fuel filter. I also have disconnected (neg) the battery cable a few times so the computer can reset itself after each replacement part. It continues to idle at around 1500-1900 whenever I shift gears or in neutral at stop lights. Early starts idles fine at around 900-1000 rpms, but then after it warms up, the high idle becomes noticeable. I have also cleaned the intake air with a carb cleaner. Any suggestions or recommendations please.
Bob ,I would run a scanner on the truck to see if you have any codes stuck in memory.Sometimes codes will be in there pointing to a faulty sensor that is borderline failing .The pcm (computer) does compare of the values it has stored for that sensor. But if it doesn't go over the threshold it will never post a chk engine light (mil). If you have an intake manifold leak the 02 sensors would go nuts and post a chk eng light after so many drive cycles (a code for lean bank 1,2)
I would scan it before anything else right now!

fortyfords.....thanx for the suggestion, I also have noticed that my *check engine light* is not working, I don't know how to replace the bulb, it seems like the whole front dash cover has to be uncovered to get to the instrument cluster. I will have it scanned and I'll also check for leaks on the intake manifold. A couple months ago, I noticed a split on the end of the small hose going into the EGR valve, I fixed that problem and it seemed to have cleared some codes at that time, as well as the rough idling. Thanx again Rich.................Bob
