OK, got the 302 sorted out. Put on an Edelbrock 600 Performer. Replaced the plug wires, had one bad wire in the origingal set. New plugs, pertronix and coil. Runs and starts nice. Adjusted the tranny and it shifts much smoother up and down.
Now I want to get a little more out of the motor. (155 psi all cylinders give or take a few psi). What do you recommend? Heads, cam, exhaust?
Add the Edelbrock cam and proper rear end gears. If that's not enough I would lose the 302 for a 351W. 351W short block better bang for the buck than heads IMO.
I have a CompCam 268 in my 302, but it also has Ford Racing roller rockers, 1.7 rods, and aluminum heads. Call Summit or Jeg's; they'll know what cam to set you up with.
Chitown65,
Not sure if that question was asked to me (?), but here's what's on my '59: the BFG's are 255/70X15's on 15X8" chrome smoothie's in the rear, and 225/70X15's pm 15X7" chrome smoothie's on the front!
Edelbrock makes a cam matched to your manifold. Works very well on the street. Idle is pretty mellow though. Which was fine with me. It works about the same as a CompCAMS 260. A little less power and a little better fuel mpg than Daryls cam. Of course he lives in California, where gas is really cheap
I don't see why not. Obviously, make sure they come in the bolt pattern your truck has. Shouldn't be a problem! I only ask one thing once you get them though: pix!!!
Fatfenders,
You know, I can't justify even a fabrication of a reply to that. CA is about 20-30cents a gallon more than probably 2/3rds of the entire U.S., so I can't dispute that. It's simple Econ101: Supply & Demand. Too darn many cars in CA, especially here in SoCal, and we ALL know the gas company's are blood-suckers and will keep their prices as competitively high as possible... so whataya gonna do, eh??? In the past 4 months, I've taken Butch out for ONE drive, and that was only about 50 miles. So, at 10mpg (+/-) and $2.33/gal for 87 octane gas, I figure the outing cost me about $12. Hmm, $12 for 50 miles, that's ~ $.24/mile. So much for long trips in Butch for now anyways. On the up-side, with him being in the garage so much lately, "he sure is purdy"... (lots of time to spit shine the ol' boy).
A set of headers will really make a difference. Cams are great, but if the engine is not breathing, it's not happening. I'm looking for set of headers for my 56 before I put a cam, lifters, etc. Fords need to breathe. Of course nitrous oxide wouldn't hurt (kinda forces the 302 to breathe)
Come on! Get real! Everybody knows the streets in Calif. are paved with gold and everybody has an agent.....You probably don't even pump your own gas, you probably have your gardener take LOLA, the Jag and the Cadillac into the valley when you need gas.
How gullible do you think us non-Calfornians are?
Chitown - several of the cam companies have websites where dumb folk like us can type in all our specs, etc and they tell what cam to buy.
I don't know, I can't speak for Daryl, however living in CA all my life, I don't have people driving me to a gas station, my street is not paved in gold, I own a lawnmower which I use myself (by the way, its a Craftsman self propelled with 7 horses under the hood). I don't think anyone near me owns a Jag or Cadillac? Just work hard to make my payments on our expensive homes, and pay for the high price of gas, which you non- Californians don't have to pay. Since I haven't been anywhere else but California, I can't comment and won't comment on other States. I'm not saying California is a great place to live, but we do have some very nice Ford Trucks! Isn't that what this is all about?
just finished building a new motor for my 53 f100, it's a 302 c with a 351 crank. you use the 302 rods and get shorter pistons to suit. the engine shop said it's good for at least 10 percent more horses than a stock 351.
Add a good cam, carb and headers and there you go.
Oh yeah , dont go complaining about petrol prices, down here in aus we are paying around $1.03 a liter , thats around $4.50 a gallon
Scott.
Just got done working on my 86 F150 and I would say that if you are looking for more power on the lower end use the RV cam for the 351. It will give you more torque on the bottom end and good responce in the mid-range. Sealpower, Crane, and Comp Cams all make this cam and it does wonders for the engine. With the 302 you may find that the engine is over carberated. In the late 70,s hot rod had a series of articals about the matching of CFM's to the engine and they recomended closer to 450 for the 302. If I remember correctly the Edelbrok 600 is the smallest one they make. You may want to look at getting their tune-up kit that will allow you to change jet size, metering rods, springs for the rods and a chart to assist you in determining the route you wish to go. Good luck. I forgot to mention that when you use this cam you will have to change your firing order also because the 351 has a different firing order than the 302.

Exactly RMF,
Those Californians. They pick their mayors and governers at the movies. The lazy ones just use HBO or Showtime. And then they all want to complain when things don't go so well. Frankly I'm tired of all this oil company innuendo. Don't you people realize there is an energy shortage just prior to every major holiday since 1974.
Sorry Chitown, your thread has been jacked. Can we have a thread about stroker SBs soon? There's how you get some real small block torque that will even raise the big block boys eyebrows. "Or perhaps eyebrow singular if you're old like Niolon.
