97 f150 4X4 floor shifter auto. 4WD will not engage. Checked front drive shaft, it engages so it's good. Checked vacuum on front differential, it's good. My question is, when the pin on the front end is moved, what takes place inside the front differential to lock the front end together. I understand this is a center axle disconnect system, but how or what happens inside. I believe whatever locks the axles together is my problem. What do I need to replace to make it work again? Thanks....
I know you're not suposed to double post, but try this question for Racerguy or Canadianfordtech in the '97-03 forum. I have a basic idea, but I'd probably end up confusing myself and making you twice as lost.
There should be two sources of vacuum to the front diff IIRC. One for engaging and one for disengaging. This way the truck's diff will stay engaged should vacuum go away in the engaged hose. There is a shift fork or some other device that is drawn by the vacuum toward the engagement mechanism. The vacuum also retracts this device when you shift out. The culprit is usually the fork if you have vacuum in both lines.
Hope I didn't lead you astray with my limited knowledge. Like I said pose this question for Racerguy or Canadianfordtech. They can lead you in the right direction.
