replacing 4 speed with a five speed problem!

I have a B1986 F350 2WD Dually, with a 351 Windsor and a T-18 4- speed Borg Waner transmisson. Does any one out there know what 5 speed transmission type and model would replace this 4 speed T-18 with little or no alterations.

Yes, the bellhousings are compatible, but I don't know if the T5 will take the 351's torque. Maybe it will - I just don't know for sure. If you look around, you can find a ZF 5 speed for less than $2000.

Edit: in fact, http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...906525240&rd=1

The T-5 is basically a car transmission - If you are going to use the dually as a truck you'll want a ZF.

Towing anything with a T-5 is a *bad* idea. They're not really all that strong, especially if you're not a very precise shifter.

I concur. A Borg Warner T-5 in a heavy(full-size) truck plus the added weight of a trailer or a bed full of stuff equals breakage.

No, it's a good transmission - just not in a truck or behind anything that makes more than about 350-400hp.

They can't shift and they strip out the synchros, for starters. Second, they have no overtravel limiters, so if you are slamming it into gear and holding it you can bend shift forks (this is fixed by adding an aftermarket shift lever with limiters). Just go to the drags on Saturday or Sunday - for every one that blows T-5s on a regular basis, there's someone who's got innumerable runs on his T-5. It's a mixed bag. I've got 170K on the T-5 in my Turbo Z, and it's not been babied ever.

That said, a T-5 is not going to do much good on towing. 350-400hp and about 5000lbs GCVWR is about their limit before you start stripping teeth off the gears, even on the V-8 rated models. GM managed to get away with it in their S-trucks, but they have a pitiful towing rating anyway.

In short, put the T-5 in a car that's properly driven and it will go for a long, long, long time, but it's intolerant of some kinds of abuse and it has strict weight/load limits. It's a nice-shifting manual, and it's got a good aftermarket. It just doesn't belong in a truck or in any vehicle that's going to try towing something.

The T-5 is now made by Tremec Transmission Corporation. Here are the specs for the current and recent past models:

but of course MOST trans's will last a long if not beaten on or abused but that is not what we are looking for here, we are looking for that indestructable one, sure isn't a t-5 as isn't most trans but others will hold respectively longer.
