91 Ford Explorer stalling when cold --
I have a 91 V-6 Explorer that -
(1) Starts up and drives fine for the first few minutes
(2) After a few minutes (and before the temp guage starts to register) it will die as you try to accelerate unless you "jazz" the throttle. Feels just like a broken accel pump on a carburated car.
(3) As soon as the temp starts to register everything returns to normal and it drives just fine.
I receive a Temp sending unit out of range error code even though I have tried two new senders. (the one next to the thermostat).
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated -
Steve
2) Did you run the self-test with the engine warmed up? A lot of times, the ECT code is a result of running the self-test on a cold engine.
Before replacing the ECT, did you verify that the wiring between the ECT and PCM is ok? Trouble code point to circuits, not sensors. The computer can't look down through the wiring to see a bad sensor. It can only "see" what's right there in its face.
3) Did you replace the correct temperature sender? Your '91 (if it's like my '92) has two temperature senders: one feeding the dash gauge (single wire connector) and one feeding the computer (has two wires in the connector).
Wow, thank you for the reply - you obviously are an expert on this.
(1) Don't remember the code # but it was during a KOER
(2) Engine was warmed up during test
(3) I think you have identified where I went wrong. I replaced the single wire sensor - I thought it strange that the temp guage could perform normally if the sensor was indeed bad. I do not see the two wire sensor you mentioned - where is it located.
Thank you for your help -
Steve
