Question 91 explorer temp gauge always cold

I own a 91 explorer and recently the temp gauge stays cold. When I start the truck it goes al the way left below the cold then it get to the 'C' and stays there. The engine doesn't seem to be having any adverse reactions to this symptom. I checked the coolant level and it looked fine. I read somewhere that the fan clutch might cause this problem. I need help please.

Thanks, Chris

I would replace the sending unit first. It is probably on the way out. eventually, it will not read at all. To check the gauge, remove the wire going to the temo sending unit, ground it to the engine and see if it goes all the way up past hot. Before replacing it, check the thermostat first. Remove the radiator cap when the engine is cold. Start it up. Check the coolant, it shopuld not be circulating thru the radiator. If it is, then replace the thermostat because it is stuck open.
