Exclamation Help!!!

Ok folks,
I am new here and I have a very serious problem. My Fianc'ee sold our Ranger to her Ex's son and he neglected to make payments. I went and gor the truck back, but .......... No battery, exhaust cut off 6 inches from the converter, and will not start. I jumped the starter solenoid and eventually got it started (if you can call it that) It misses severely and while driving it the 15 miles to her mom's house where I can work on it the converter overheated and started throwing pieces of molten metal out the back. I thought it may have been a plugged converter, but it does not even start smoothly at first or idle well. Several weeks after he took possesion of the truck he states the truck started running rough and he had to keep putting fuel injector cleaner in it and changed the fuel filter to keep it going. This was very strange to me since this truck has purred like a kitten since new and it is a 1 owner truck. I asked him if he had run it out of gas and he said "Probably about 5 or 6 times." (glad he's not my kid). Can anyone give me any clues as to what is happening. I am thinking it may be the fuel pressure regulator, maybe it has gotten some dirt in it.

Please help!!

Bryce

Welcome to FTE!

What year is the Ranger? It has the 3.0L engine in it, right?

The severe misfiring on the trip probably burned up whatever was left of the converter and exhaust, so it looks like those will have to be replaced/repaired, no matter what.

But first things first, you need to pull codes from the computer. If it's a '94 or earlier, you can pull the codes without any special tools. If '95+, you need to use a scan tool.

It is a 94 with a 5 speed. I am thinking now I may have understated my problem. I would barely run and would only run about 55 mph (down hill) 30 (up hill). There has been no check engine light either.

Thanks for the interest

The check engine light doesn't have to be on or stay on for trouble codes to be stored. Here is a good way to pull the codes:

http://www.dalidesign.com/hbook/eectest.html

Hopefully it'll provide some leads on what is causing the misfiring and other issues.

I tried using the instructions and pulling the codes from the computer. The only thing that came up was hard code 32 and stored code 33. These are EGR codes, I cannot imagine the EGR causing this much trouble. Am I mistaken? I have checked the cap, rotor, plugs and wires. Everything looked fine. I'm not sure where to go from here.

Help.
