I time my engine by advancing it a little at a time until I just hear it spark knocking, then I back off a little bit. I don't know what degree this is though.
get your hands on a timing light and check the timing so if some thing goes wrong you have a point to go back to then advance the timing till you hear it start to LIGHTLY ping now bring it back about two degrees. if you use a high octane gas you will be able to advance the timing alot further but then you have to run that same gas all the time. i have a chart around here some where i'll try to find it.
I already have a timing light and its set to 12 right now runnign on 93 W/O any prob, but what im asking is what are the extermes with different octains.
ok i found one of the charts. here they used a bone stock 5.0 and they ran it at 15 degrees adv. on 93 octane fuel. it made 6 hp more than stock (stock is 10 i believe). just for safety with a stock set up i wouldn't go more than 14 degrees and after you put the MSD ignition in crank up your fuel pressure about 5 to 10 psi it will give you a little more power and the hotter ignition won't have a problem burrning it. where you set your timing depends a lot on you set up and what your doing with it. at twelve degrees you can use 89 with out any problems.
