Hello again. I am looking at the 97 5.8 on ebay and thinking about bidding on it. What I want to know is if the E4od transmission for a 4 wheel drive can be used on a 2 wheel drive truck if the transaxle is removed. Also can this computer be used if the truck is not 4 wheel drive. I want to buy it but not if the work required is so intense as to cause more cost then it is worth. Thanks
I am actually putting the motor in a 54 Ford 2 wheel drive truck. I was worried about removing the transaxle and installing a drive shaft. I assumed that would be no problem but in my head I was worried. Thanks
Ed
You will have to change the tail shaft and it's housing for the 2wd setup, as the t-case bolts to the tranny, you might look for a ttb setup and convert the old girl to 4x4.
Not a chance. I have a budget and I am sticking to it. I am going to look into this tail shaft stuff though. Do you think that the E4oD transmision is a good one? Ed

so you are putting this motor/tranny in a 54. are you going to swap over all the electrical for this because that tranny is controlled by the ecu and wont work any other way.
That is what I was planning. I was going to rewire the truck fresh, add whatever sensors I needed and of course the computer(ecm). Am I missing anything? Ed
I think you would be best to find the wiring from a mustang gt 88-93 with mass-air for the motor. then run an ecu from a lightning that had the e4od tranny combo. the newer systems ran obd-II electronics and are harder to tune. check out fordfuelinjection.com great site with plenty of stuff to read
What? None of you guys can tell me anything about the 97 5.8? Is it a good engine. How about the Eaode transmission. Is this a good swap. Come on, I need help and advice. Is this the good engine or should I aim elsewhere. Ed
Its a good motor, just a pain to swap with the 97 electronics.
The work will be intense to get the tranny working. The motor wouldn't be so hard, but you'll have to do some hard-core hacking to get the tranny working, since it has the newer electronics..
Wiring diagrams might be your best bet in figuring out the transmission controls. I don't think they would change the interface, so it's a good possibility an older EEC-IV computer for the E4OD would work, but I can't make any promises.
