I am looking to replace all of the factory audio. I have about $500. What kind of speakers, head unit, and amps should I buy? Any help would be appreciated! I have a 1988 b2
Well mine doesnt bump too hard and wont rattle my license plate, but i can go over 70 with the windows down and hear it fine. My main advise since you dont have a whole lot of money, but enuf to get good stuff is to get a head unit that puts out a lot so you dont hafta budget in an amp right now. I have an older panasonic unit that puts out 50w per channel. So 200 total. cost me a little over $200 but that was a few years ago.. its in its third car right now. Then i went to pep boys and bought a box with two 8s and two tweeters rated at 300w. It uses both rear channels so its getting 100w and it sounds great and it was only $50. Then for the front i have pioneer 6 1/2 inch 3 ways that are crystal clear and $120 for the pair. Whole thing cost me about $400 all together.. i didnt get em all at the same time though. Anyway, thats how id do it again if was starting over.
I agree with him, but the best thing to probably do is buy something that's on clearance at crutchfield.com, it's debatable on the best brands but personally I'm going with audiobahn and blaupunkt, i have a blaupunkt head unit, with blaupunkt component system in front and 5x7's in the back, and I have 2 Audiobahn 12" Subs in a large sealed box, which are each rated at about 600 watts RMS which is what you want, high RMS, peak matters but not as much as RMS, and I also have a 2-channel amp from audiobahn, but I've spent quite a bit on this, but you should be able to make it out with, a $150 head unit, spend bout $50 for both pairs of speakers, then you can get you a decent sub for about $150 with a box, and get a decent little amp, and that should do you about $500. Have fun!
Consider what you want in your system, I mean honestly a good place to skimp is gonna be your subs unless you wanna bump rap all day (even still build your own box save $100) also if you buy a multi channel amp and power subs and rear speakers you dont need to get a crazy headunit, just something to power some smaller dash speakers and tweeters (if need be) crutchfield is a good place to buy though (even though their amps are priced pretty high i think but they will def be really good) also they make instilation so easy (lots of instruction)
get a new head unit off of ebay (less than $100), but make sure it comes with a wiring harness and everything is still in the box...go to a bunch of stores with car audio sections and see if they will sell you a floor model of subs and a box (usually they take off heavy with that) usually like $100 for one sub and $200-$225 for two, and then use what you have left for an amp (about $200 should get oyu a good amp)
but shop around and find the best deals...don't think you have to buy everything at once or at one place....cause that's how you waste money
My best advice is the same as Cherry. Buy a Head unit thatcan power you door and rear speakers so that if you get a subwoofer you will only have to buy an amp to fit the sub and not the other speakers.500$ should be plenty to get a decent system. That's what i did and i got a pretty good system.
$500 will get u a great system if u shop wisely, and dont go for the thing because of it's brand, go look it up on the internet on true RMS ratings and peak and always remember dont buy the first thing you see because you will kick ureself in the u know where, when u go to another store and see the same thing for say $50 less, and if u do shop around and find the best deal then whenever you find something that's say $5 cheaper, you wont feel as bad about it
If you can find Infinity Kappas cheap enough to get those and some kind of 4 way amp...that would do you well. I have 4 inch Kappas in the front (model 42.5i) and 5x7's in the back (model 572.5cf). I have yet to amp them but the front are rated 50W RMS and 150W peak. As for the back they are rated at 100W RMS and 300W peak.
