Brakelights not working

I have a 1998 XLT V6 SOHC. I was told the other day that my brakelights were not working but my tail lights still work. I've checked the light bulbs and fuses and they're still good but i'm not getting any power to my fuse box. What could it be? Please help!!!

Could it be the brakelight switch on the brake pedal?

It has to have some kind of mechanism to know when you are pushing on the brakes. If you don't have a manual, check out the repair guides at autozone.com. There's information there about brake light switches.

There are 2 filiments in the tail light socket. One is for the tail lights and the other is for the brake light.

If you have cruise control, have you noticed any problem shutting it off by tapping the brakes? I had the same problem and found out 6 months later that my brake lights were not working. It ended up being the switch under the brake pedal. It operates both. I had no brake lights the whole time before anyone said anything to me. Sounds like the same problem.

I checked on my 99 and the switch is located just above the pedal. It's much easier to get to than my 91 Ranger.
