A friend of mine needs to know what transmission is in his 94 Explorer XLT, all he knows is it is 2X4 and has 4.0 L engine, and for that matter what tranny would I have in my 95 Limited? Any help is greatly appreciated! BTW, I can get VINs if needed.....

Found on the door sticker. 91-94 are A4LD and the 95, if a V6, has a 4R55E even though the door indicates "T". Basically still an A4LD. They had to change the name because of the reputation. Even the later 5R55E is basically the A4LD. Filters all fit each other (downward compatable, te 5R55E has an improved filter)if that is your interest.
Thank you very much, I was reading some old threads about transmissions last night and was wondering how much Ford dealers charge vs what some mechanics charge to do a full 16-qt tranny fluid flush and refill.

PEP BOYS charges 79.99 for the flush. that includes some specail trans guard additive, the 16 quarts of proline mercon fluid and some trans flush additive.
they charge 100.00 for the trans fluh and then drop the pan and change the filter. I believe the 4wd a4ld doesn't have a filter, only a pickup screen, but you should still have the pan dropped ans inspected for debris
The old ones did just have a screen but SPX developed a new glass fiber filter for the 5R55E with 3 times the filter area of the old screen and this is now reommended by SPX for the A4LD. This American made filter is only $10 at bulkpart.com, compared to $22 for the Taiwan one at AutoZone.
