rear diff leaking, is much more pronounced after 30+ minutes of driving, but the whole thing always appears wet. When I first noticed it, I checked it and it too low to tell, but I got almost 2 quarts in it. I tightened all the bolts to the best of my ability (I got about a 1/4 turn on some of the lower bolts), but the problem continues.
I have never opened up a diff, but from what I have heard, I can pop that plate off and replace the gasket? Or is this problem bigger?
It's a simple fix. Take off the cover, completely drain the differential, clean the mating surfaces, use a gasket making product on one of the surfaces making sure to surround the bolt holes, and reinstall. Fill up with gear lube and friction modifier if you have limited slip. Shouldn't take more than 20 minutes.
Yeah it's easy. There is no gasket there, just silicone sealer. While it's off drill a little hole in the bottom of the bell and weld a nut to the inside. Install a bolt to the outside with a sealing washer and you have a drain plug for rear end oil changes.
