My 91 f-150 has the 4.9l and a 5spd. When i first start it up and around 1800 to 2000 rpms there is a lot of piston noise (clatter). I am also having problems with the oil pressure dropping when at an idle. The oil pressure problem is erratic and only happens every once in a while. the clatter happens all the time. As far as i can tell the truck has 167,000 miles on it, my guess is it is time for a new motor. Oh ya I swithed to 20w-50 to try and stop the oil pressure drop but it didnt help. Any ides?
Probably the sending unit. Those gauges are not really gauges, more like idiot lights. I have the same clatter, which i have determined to be a lifter tap. I just ignore it, turn up the radio and go on.
I have a 93 E150 that only 58000 when i got it in 2002. That was one of the first things i noticed was low pressure and that rattle that drove me nuts on the start up! I spent a lot of cash on guages and checking the oil pump. Nothing other than the sending unit was replaced and the pressure did seem to improve but my rattle remained. After going threw several differnt oil filters with a back flow protection i gave in to an old friend that had been telling me repetedly to use only motorcraft filters and ad "slick 50" next oil change. Convinced the motor was "doomed" i thought it couldn't hurt.....
Im now at 87000 and never miss adding slick 50 when doing a oil change. My start up rattle is gone as long as i have 50 in it. I have tried other aditives and none them worked only slick 50 what's in it i have no ideal but it keeps the parts slick enough to stop the start up rattle until the oils gets up. And no I don't work for them. I was willing to have the motor rebuilt to end my suffering but all those thought are all old memories.
Good luck and remember motorcraft filters and slick 50 next oil change it works!!!!!!!.....
I dont think it is the gauge that is bad. when the oil pressure drops the enging starts knocking as long as i bring the rpms up it will have oil pressure.
This is just an observation on this problem. At the shop we would see the 300 six come in that would rattle at cold startup. What we finally found was Ford was not putting a gasket between the oil pump and the block and the flange on the oil pump was warped enough to cause the block (including oil filter) to drain back into the pan creating the same situation as if you had just screwed on a new /empty oil filter. I have put many a gasket on these and cured the problem.
