302 engine problem

I'm having problems with my Ford 302 carburated engine.

When I pull up to a stop sign, it does not initially want to idle. After giving a little gas for a few seconds, it seems to settle down and be fine. When letting off the gas or downshifting, you can tell it seems to be running really flat. It does not always do either of the above. Sometimes it seems fine. It also has a distinct smell to the exhaust as well...something that just started when it started running poorly.
Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Kevin

Welcome to (FTE) my guess is the carb is running lean. Others will ring in .

P.S a rich carb may cause the same.

Carb !!

I had a similar problem with my '79 400. Then I remembered that I hadn't cleaned the throttle and choke linkage for a long, long time.

You might try some carb cleaner on the linkage on a COLD engine. Give ample time to dry completely and follow up with a little WD-40 lubricant.
