400 not running....help!!!

My buddy had the same thing happen. a peace of the nylon timing gear got in the oil pump and lock it up which caused the shear pin to break and it made two very backfires out the exhaust.

I supose we will try the dist 180. I just lines up with the compression stroke every time.....heck...when i get a chance to mess with the old thing....haha......who knew old trucks could be this hard to figure out!!!!!

If it jumped the timing chain or sheared the pin in the dizzy the resulting backfire can also shear the rubber part of the balance ring. It wont function correctly anymore.

If anything got in the oil pump, make sure that you replace the pickup. The factory screens get tired and sag, opening up the bypass hole. That's how stuff gets in there.

UPDATE: We found out that it was the Timing gears and Chain. New set...truck ran....imagine that! Chain had TONS of play in it. Gear slipped....timing off. Hope this can help others that might have a boss that thinks he knows it all! haha.....thanks!
