If you have a full time by some odd chance, then just put it in 4wd hi and disengage the hubs and that will 2wd for that pick-up, but it's highly unlikey in the 80's on up trucks.

The '81 parts truck I have I drove around my yard for a while before starting to strip it. It has the Borg Warner 1345 t-case. The 4WD light will only come on when you pull from 2wd (furthest to the dash) in to 4wd hi or lo. Maybe the sensor is not functioning properly? Furthest toward the dash you are for sure in 2wd.
