Anyone know of an easy way to replace the Ignition Switch without any more damage than what has already been done by pervious owner? Need to replace the key mechanism on newly aquired '64 F250.......
In my '66 F250, I used instructions from my shop manual to: Turn key to the ACC position. Use a paper clip or similar to depress a small pin behind the small hole seen just below the key. Turn the key counter-clockwise. Pull the key and its tumbler mechanism out from the switch housing.
To remove the ignition switch itself from the dash, my manual says to: Twist the switch 1/8 turn counter-clockwise (viewed from the terminal end). Maybe this will work for your '64; I hope so. Cheers.
Let's see... Maybe you could remove the whole thing by just using the second part of the instructions. As I look at the old switch I pulled out of my truck, it looks like you'd get the whole thing that way.
Can not remove switch w/out removing key cylinder. Sound like the previous owner may have damaged the switch to extent you would want to replace, or locksmith may not be able to pick. If so, i have removed key cylinder using a drill down the center. If you have a replacment cylinder you find a shaft with the cam that secures the cylinder to the switch. If you drill down the center with drill bit larger that shaft the cylinder should come out. Suggest starting small and working up. Can not recall final size drill but whats the diff if you don't intend to keep the switch. May be possible to do without damaging the switch, problem it's doubtful can be done without getting metal shaving into the electrical contact portion of the switch. If you intend to salvage the switch, then would consider member rerunz suggestion. Although, would call around and see what local locksmith would charge, may find replacing switch cheaper, at least in my area comparing prices may be close. Think replacement switch can run between $20 to $30.
