on my moms 95 explorer... ther o/d off light comes on and flashes constantly while the engine is running.... does anyone have any idea what could be wrong..... is the fluid low or something? The overdrive works properly and is not actually turned off...
any help will be appreciated as my father thinks something bad is wrong..
It is seeing something wrong. If you really think the overdrive is working then it is likely theat the lockup in the torque converter is not engaging. This will cause an increase in engine rpm by about 300. This is often a valve body problem with the TCC solenoid. In the later 5R55E transmissions there have been a number of reported valve bodygasket blow outs. Haven't heard much on your model.
I've had the same problem on my 95 xlt. You have a couple of options: (1) using an EECIV reader, pull the codes to see what they indicate. If you don't have a reader, most AutoZones will do it free of charge. (2) disconnect the battery for at least 5 minutes. This will clear all the codes and reset everything. Hook the battery back up and drive it for a awhile. The OD light may not come back on.
Also, it's not good to drive it a significant amount of distance with the OD light flashing. Aside from the RPMs being higher, the transmission also shifts harder which can damage the trans.
There are numerous posts on this board about this problem. Just do a search on 'OD light flashing'.
