i've heard the 1st time the oil filter is changed, its been installed really tight from the factory and can be a problem. when i get the place where i want to change it, will the filter wrench that fits on the crimped ends of the filter do the job or not on a '04 w/4.6l ?......thanks
i don't know about the 4.6, but the factory filter is on tight. I use a flexible handle strap filter wrench for the initial filter removal, then a cup wrench with a 3/8" ratchet and extension work great on my 5.4
yes the factory filter is on very tight it is put on at 45 ft lbs i spent 2 hours getting it off you need to first remove the stupid liner under the oil filter there is just 2 bolts i ended up putting a screw driver through it and twisting it only to find there was a blue thread locker on the threads.have fun
hey ford390gashog-thanks for the tips. it'll be awhile-just bought my first ford and learning about all these things that makes fords tough (to work on). i tried to find something on this in the archives but couldn't find any titles or subject heading to guide me. this oil filter deal is like something i ain't seen-shouldn't be like this..why?
because ford has a special tool to remove them but only they have it it is to make it si you won't change your own oil they want you to pay them big when you can do it for a lot less.
I think what they do is put the filters on at the factory without first putting some oil on the gasket. The dry gasket then grips like it was welded on. It does come off with less of a fight if the engine is warm. My first change was a (**&%+*) but after pre-oiling the gasket when I installed the new filter, and not putting it on too tight, the next change was not bad.
that's the problem--the 1st time-there's no excuse or good reason to put this filter on overly tight at the factory, causing everyone so much misery, when removing the 1st time. i'm sure everyone knows how to put a filter on properly-so it'll come off easy. why does ford keep allowing this to happen.
I did a quick search of the archives under "oil filter" which resulted in 26 pages.
I have no idea why this is even an issue. The oil and filter are as easy to change as on any vehicle I've ever owned or worked on (i.e. many - foreign and domestic). The filter is not hard to reach, there is nothing to remove (as stated above), and with the right wrench (as described in at least 20 other posts), the filter comes off easily.
just my two cents on the subject. my first oil change is free from the dealer with a new vehicle purchase. so i just the dealer deal with it and ask them to be considerate when replacing the filter.
txfx4x4-if you have time, give me a few pointers on how to search the archives for a subject..i'm new. i did click on archives in right columm but didn't get anything useful. thanks

there is you need to remove the oil filter shield to get to it at least on my 03 expy with the shield in place you can not even get your hand or a wrench around it it even says to remove it in the ford service book
At the top of the page I'm looking, at there is a drop down menu titled "Search". Type in "Oil Filter" or "Oil Change" and hit return. I mean no offense to anyone here but the same topics have been covered over and over.
As far as the shield goes, this is an F-150 Forum so I assumed that the writer was looking for an F-150 related answer. On the '04 F-150, there is nothing (as is nothing at all) to remove.
