I've got a 92 F250 with the E4OD. Since you're tranny just has 40k on it, you might try a simple fix before trying a total rebuild. The aluminum valve bodies are notorious for sticking. Especially since aluminum exands quite a bit when hot, it sounds like yours might be sticking. Replace the aluminum valve body with a heavy duty steel one. This is a simple procedure, and even if it doesn't fix it, you can always use this new, heavy duty, steel one in your rebuild. It will help the shifts and be much more robust.

It has been a while since I got mine quoted. It seems like the new valve body was around $100 and the labor was about the same. Talk to a transmission guy. Mine acted like it was something that he had done quite a few times. As far as the difficulty. If I am remembering right, the valve body is located right underneath the tranny pan. You pull the pan (after draining the fluid) and it is right there. All you have to do is remove a couple of bolts, pull it off, and bolt the other back on.

I really like my new valve body. The shifts are more positive, and it should last longer, be more robust, and doesn't stick.
