On a 1975 crew cab f250 I can't seem to get the horn to work. I pulled the steering wheel and I can get it to honk by pushing in the spring laoded button and touching the outer column at the same time, but it won't work when I touch the steering shaft and spring at the same time.
Is this a 2wd? If so then there should be a wire on the rag joint next to the steering box. This wire connects the shaft in the steering column to the steering box, grounding the steering shaft in the column. The wire goes from the nut on the steering shaft side across to the nut on the steering box side.
It is a 2wd. Are you talking down by the frame of the truck? What color of wire? There is two wires that have been cut behinde the steering wheel on the right. There are six wires on a block. The two closest to the shaft are gone. Don't know what color or what they are for.
Under the hood. Look at the joint between the steering column and the steering box. I think the wire is green but it doesn't matter. The wire is NOT part of a harness. It just goes from a bolt on one side of the steering coupler to a bolt on the other side. If there is no wire on the steering coupler this is you problem.
When you touch the wire to the steering shaft there is no ground because the steering coupler insulates the steering shaft from the chassis (ground plane) of the vehicle. The outer column is grounded to the chassis by its mounting bracets. The horn works by grounding the circuit. The steering box is grounded because it is mounted to the frame. Wire the steering column to the steering box at the steering coupler.
