Steering Column Alignment Problem

The wife sent me out to buy a trailer and i came home with a 1965 Ford F250. Not bad shape and will suite the purpose of hauling junk around town, but the cab probably has some sag causing the steering column to be out of alignment with the steering box. When turning the wheel while the truck is parked, the whole column thumps like it is going to tear right out of the truck. When moving, there is no problem. I know the answer is to replace the rusted cab supports, but is there a temporary fix to make it through the summer?

You might try placing a 1X4 in there, I used one about 4" long for a while on one of my trucks. It is 3/4" thick. Take a look at the rag joint, it might need replacing.
