Had a front end alignment done at the Valencia Ford dealer yesterday on my 92 Aerostar EXT AWD Eddie Bauer.
Car is tracking very straight now with my hands off the wheel, but the steering wheel is slightly turned to the right.
Do I need to be concerned that the steering wheel isnt straight, even though the car is tracking straight?
Thanks - Tony
Ford states a deviation of +/- 5 degrees off center is acceptable. If it is any consolation, my '91 AWD is always slightly off center as well. You may notice when the tires are rotated the wheel may come back to proper center, then be off again at the next rotation. I have had my front end aligned at least 15 times over the years with the same results. It still drives me nuts but I've learned to live with it.
And one that makes a pathological liar out of my wife ----- "that van is (fill in the blank problem) but as soon as I drive it, no problem is found. Sexist Aerostar?
I replaced the tie rod ends on my van a year ago and I was surprised that there are no adjusting sleeves for the rod ends. Basically, the toe-in adjustment is made in one-thread increments of the tie rod ends into the rack. There is almost zero chance of getting the steering wheel centered and the toe-in set properly at the same time. So the steering wheel is always slightly off-center.
But then again, I've been described as slightly off-center more times than I care to recall...
