I just dont understand why..
I had a situation at a previous job where a co-worker wanted to sell a laptop. At first he said "It was his". Ok... then the story changed, he was selling it for someone. It was starting to smell a little fishy. Then finally he fessed up to me and said that this kid stole it out of someone's car and was looking to sell it. Of course I said.. alright, I don't care.. "I'm still interested". The second I walked out the door I drove to the local police department and reported the problem. I got involved in a sting operation!
They had me get the laptop to "borrow" from this kid to "try out". The police kept it for a while and ran serial numbers, etc. It turned up stolen. The next step was to nail the kid. Well, now it turned out that I wasn't interested in the laptop, but I had a "friend (or cousin.. I can't remember)" that was. That "friend"/ relative was a detective. So we arrange to meet this kid at the local high school to make the deal. We pulled up and waited for the kid in an undercover jeep. I talked to the kid for a minute.. then the detective had me wait in the jeep while he worked out a deal. The deal was made.. and I watched from the car as the detective took the badge out.. the kid turned pale. We had the kid follow us to the Police Station where the detective handled it from there.
It turned out he admitted to stealing it, but since he was under 18.. I think he got some sort of community service. To cover me.. he told the kid I was some sort of auxilliary sherrif's deputy who works part time.. and that I was obligated to turn him in. Oh.. the co-worker lost his job as a result (the store owner was notified by the police what was happening.. I guess as part of the investigation).
Serves them both right! What trash. I was glad to do my part to help out. I've had stuff stolen so I know what it's like to lose something due to theft. Any little you can give back can be satisfactory.
I know exactly what you are saying, I am not the man I was when I was 22 and I do not think the same way about things as when I was 22, THANKFULLY!
I think that is why our founding fathers made 35 years of age the minimum baseline for getting elected president. You really need some water under the bridge .
I had a guy come up after me, after selling "cheap" new tools to other mechanics. I know someone selling new digital torque wrenches from Sears for $40 had to steal them, especially when he has about a dozen. So, I told him something basically like, I only buy hot stuff because I only want really good deals. So, he tells me he stole it from the local Sears store. So, I grabbed it from his hand, said Thanks and started to walk away with it. He was very upset.
So, then I asked him how does it feel to have your property stolen ... when you do not even own it because you stole it. So, I gave the cry baby his stuff back and called the local Sears and let them know what he looked like and what he was stealing.
I would have beat the guy with it, but, they had a zero tolerance policy on work place violence and I was too far away to drag him behind the dumpster for a talk without a big fuss.
You know what I like to do to the really stupid people. Tell them I do not have cash and would they take a check or would they wait while I went to the ATM for money. So, I leave and while they are waiting, I go and call the cops.
My favorite catch was a guy that was stealing gas and tires from our lot cars, he fell asleep in his van while waiting for us to leave for the day and he illegally parked on the highway/sidewalk too. Which is why I noticed him. I bet he had a big surprise when Mr.Officer woke him up. Some people are too stupid to be criminals.
