98 Exlporer 5.0 AWD tranny question
I posted several months ago with this problem. The 2-3 shift takes forever. Even driving easy, you usually have to let off the gas (coast) for 2 - 4 seconds to get it into 3rd gear. I've tried the suggestions off this board such as removing bat. cable and re-setting the computer; and I've changed tran. fluid and filter. Neither helped at all. Yesterday we had a general mechanic drive it and check the computer and said he found nothing wrong. He said he has a 99 5.0 AWD and his does the same thing. Is this true ? Do they all take a long time to shift from 2nd to 3rd ?? Can that be adjusted ???

The shift pattern is a little loose in OEM setup. There are two mechanical kits you can get that will tighten the shift, or you can get an electronic kit. Baumann and Transgo make mechanical kits that have 4 stage settings to choose from. They go directly into the tranny and cannot be adjusted except to go higher. The jet electronic kit is a 4 stage kit with 4 wires - power, ground, and 2 to the tranny. You can adjust it while driving.
I run both the Baumann (in stage2) and the Jet electronic in my Explorer. One of the best mods I have ever done. You don't have to do them both, and on stock Explorers, I recommend only doing one of them.
