Where do i hook up the chains on the hoist to my 429 when I am going to lift it to weld in new motor mounts? I have my stock intake and valley pan off, and have an aluminum one to put on, but dont want to lift it from that. My exhaust manifolds are off and I have access to grade-8 bolts if needed. How did any of you successfully lift your 429/460's, and did you need to unbolt the tranny just to put in new motor mounts? Can't I just lift the motor enough (without removing tranny) to hold it up and to weld in new mounts, and then release the hoisting tension? I really need to know, thanks
Hi there,I got finished pulling my 460.I see that there has been no response to your? What i did to remove my 460 was as follows. you can bolt the chains to the back of the right head against the fire wall and on the front of the left head after removing the alternator. You probally will have to remove the fan, shroud and rad to gain enough room to pull it up high enough to work under it!If you want to leave the tranny hooked up to the engine you have to take apart the the drive shaft mount on the back the crossmember has to come out for the tranny mount so the tranny can lay down(make sure you have a pan under the back of the tranny to catch the fluid after you pull the drive shaft or you will be sorry)It will come gushing out when you liwer the tranny.I did all this after i unbolted the engine mounts.Whatever you do make sure the mounts go in the same they came out cause you will never get the engine back in.I'm not to sure if I answered all your questions here or not.If not let us know and we will do all we can to help!
AK429 - I usually use a chain criss-cross across the top of the motor from the front of the right head to the back of the left head; then adjust the hook accordingly....
When I changed the motor mounts on my 77f150 460 I jacked it up from the bottom since I didnt have a hoist then. I used a bottle jack and a piece of 2x4 underneath the front of the pan where the bolts are. It worked fine and I didnt have to undo the tranny or anything else.
