This is a 2 part question. I bought my 98 XLT used. Im wondering if I have keyless entry on it, because I have the theft light that blinks on the gauge. Is this just the security system, or are they both tied together? I saw the remotes on Ebay for the keyless entry, is there a different one for the "security system"?
Second how do I program the remotes(s) to work with my X?
Damn, that was like a 10 part question....Thanks
I also bought my 98 Explorer Sport used, and had the same questions. I bought a remote off ebay and was able to program it easily. Let me know if you need instructions on how to program it.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 06-Dec-02 AT 11:44 PM (EST)]Yes, that would be great. I was thinking of getting one off Ebay, but if I can save some cash, and find out how to program it myself, that would be cool. Thanks
By the way, Im kinda of an IT geek myself. Just finished MCSE classes, and will be certified soon if the exams go well.
I'm not certified or anything, but it is a fun job. I moved to Michigan and couldn't find a computer support job, so I'm in something a little different now. I do miss it.
Have you found a remote off ebay? I bought mine from a "deals-etc." I would avoid him. He was a pain to deal with.
I would definitely recommend this guy (texasteddyd). He's in Canada so it will take a couple extra days to get it but I got it in less than a week. He does include instructions. For the $16.22 I paid for it vs. the $50.00 the dealer quoted me, I'm extremely satisfied. Works great. They have another one that should fit yours up for auction here:
BTW, that "Theft" light on your instrument cluster is for the PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) which is the chipped key system. Check your owners manual for info on that. THAT is a pain in the a$$. To get another key (I only have one) costs $20.00 for key + $29.00 for programming = $49.00. Ridiculous. This is what the dealer quoted me.
I saw a post on here that shows how to program them, but when I tried it, my doors didnt lock/unlock. I did the one where you turn the key from off to on 8 times, leaving it ON the last time. Nothing happened.
Yeah that's the way to do it. It should work on yours I would think. Make sure you are turning it to the proper position each time because I wasn't and I had to do it about 3 times till I got it.
e_no_g - what year is yours? The 8 times applies to '98 - '01. If yours is a '95-'97 you need to turn your key on and off 5 times (assuming you have remote entry even installed).
I have a 98, and I was able to program mine. I turned the key 8 or 9 times. I actually just turned it until the doors locked and unlocked. The first time I tried it didn't work, so be patient.
Not the most useful advise ever, but there you go.
That's the trick- rapidly turn your ignition key between on and off at least 5 times, but no more than 10. Fords are set to program this way with 5, 8, or 10 twists of the key. The doors should then lock and unlock. Press any button on the remote, and the doors will then lock and unlock again. If you have more than one remote, press any button on the second remote within 5 seconds. The door locks should respond again, and your remotes should work. If you have the keypad on the door and don't have the combination, open the panel where your jack is stowed. You know, in the cargo area on the drivers side. Using a flashlight (and maybe a small mirror) you'll see a computer module planted in there, towards the front of the vehicle. There will be a sticker on it with a 5-digit number. That's the master code number, and you can use that to program in your own personal code. Write back if you need instructions for that. Getting a look at this thing is difficult- you may have to pull out on that plastic panel, shining the light as best you can. Trust me, it's in there. Good luck!
It took me like five times to get my remotes to program and I had to reprogram two of them at the exact same time. It eventually worked though. The worst part was my neighbors watching me in my driveway locking myself in the car a million times. Ha ha! If I can get it you can!!!!
