Replacement Transmission

I have a 97 F-150 4.6L with the E4OD. It has 117k miles on it, and I bought it at 112k. The first time I test drove it I felt the transmission lagging and jerking on hard accelleration. I planned on just taking it to Ford and getting the trans tightened. Well in the past few thousand miles it has gotten worse. MUUCH worse. I think the simplest way to put it is a 4 cyl. toyota tundra can kick my **** pretty bad in accelleration and top end. Now I'll get to the point. I either need new gears in my trans, or just go ahead and replace the entire thing. Does anybody have any suggestions and tips for the options I have. And btw, I'm on a verry low budget right now.

Have you looked into what a tranny shop will charge for a rebuild of your tranny?

Another option would be to swap in a low mile used tranny from a wreck, but this may cost just as much or more to do than a rebuild.

Do you have the tools and the time to do it your self?

Not enough tools, time, or skill to do it myself. What does a rebuild consist of doing to the transmission? And can different years or E4OD's be used on other years, and can one from a 4.2 or 5.4 be used on my 4.6?

I have a 97 e4od at the salvage yard I work for. I can get specs, and a number to call and order it.

Are you sure it's an E4OD?
A 4.6 usually has a 4R70W behind it.

Good catch. I thought it said 5.4 for some reason.

I'm pretty sure it's a E4OD, but I also could be wrong. I've always thought it was one. Are 4R70W's known to get messed up like I expained?
