As with most things it depends on what you want to do. The 302 is a great motor, it's over square design lends it self to a high revving street motor. If you're going to build a Mustang or a Falcon or a light truck into a street rod the 302 is awesome. But the thing that makes it a good street motor is what makes it a crappy truck motor. In a truck you want torque, lots of it. And you want it low in the rpm range. Do you want to have to spin your 4x4 to 5000 rpms to get through the mud or over some rocks? Do you want to have to rev up to 6000 to pull a trailer? That's the streangth of the 300. It is a very solid motor, 7 main bearrings compared to the 302's 5 and a gear to gear timing set so no chain to break. And the 300 makes all of it's power low, where you need it in a truck. This is obviously just an overview but hope it helps.

That pretty much covered it..I agree. I prefer a 302 for a "street" truck. It's more fun to drive than the 300, as it revs higher, and sounds better. A good bit better on the highway, with maybe better MPG. The 302 we had in a 73 f-100, all manual, and dualed out, got real good mpg. But it doesn't have near the low rpm torque of the 300. So if it's a work truck, or rockcrawler, ect, I'd rather have the 300. The average 302 should whip the average 300 at a high speed drag race down the interstate. But the 300 truck could hook a chain to the 302 truck, and drag it down the street screaming for mercy. "And probably stay below 2000 rpm to boot"... I've driven both, and like both. But they are as different as night and day...I have a 300 in my current truck. "68 F-250" And yes, I consider it more of a work truck, than a "street" truck. Thats why I stayed with the 300 when I rebuilt the engine. It's pretty much set up as a camper. "utility bed, and camper shell on top of the bed" .The 73 f-100 was more of a tooling around street truck. MK

I ordered my truck with the 300 because it's SOOOOO easy to work on. It's all there, sitting out there waiting to put a wrench on!
If I remember correctly the 300's mpg numbers were slightly better too.

Dunno...Depends...The 300 is not known for great mpg..It can do ok if you keep the rev's down, and don't have a lead foot.. For a street truck, I wouldn't be surprised if the 2 bbl 302 could do better. I know the 302 we had got good mpg. It had a 2 bbl, 3 speed manual, power nothing...But it had a higher rear gear than say my f-250 and it's 300...I have a 4.10...I bet the 302 f-100 we had had a 3.73 at the lowest. Maybe higher...MK

When my '83 was new, I would get 19-20 mpg overall highway and city. The highway was like 22 mpg. It's a 300, 3 spd + OD (.71) and 3.08 rear end and 41 psi tires. It's a Super Cab and 8 ft bed too.
Those days are over now. It's been assigned to "ranch duty".

302 is a car engine used in a truck application. 300 is a truck engine used in a truck. Ever wonder why no F-250's ever had the 302 in it?

Lots of light duty F250's have 302's...
But, the 302 was never offered over 8500 LB GVWR
