[updated:LAST EDITED ON 24-Dec-02 AT 10:28 AM (EST)]I have a 98 Sport, 4.0 SOHC that is running hot. Turn the heater on and the temp gauge lowers to to almost normal. I am going to pick up a thermostat and swap it out for the old one. Is it a pain to swap them out? Is there anything I should be mindful of? BTW, I noticed this after I had my engine oil flushed and replaced. Probably something I shouldn't have done.
It is most likely the thermostat as they seem to be a common point of failure. When it went on my father's, the temp. guage showed it running hot. He brought it to the dealer so I don't know how hard it is to change. All is well now, though. Good luck & Happy Holidays :-X12
I just changed my thermostat last night and it wasn't all that hard. I had to remove the throttle body and air tube connected to it. It was a little difficult get to all the screws that hold it together. Once you have the screws out remove the hose clamp on the top of the thermostat housing. You can then pull the top housing foward at an angle to expose the thermostat. Just pull it out and replace. There is a o-ring on the top edge of the thermostat you will need to keep or if damaged replace. Also don't forget to drain your coolant or you will have a mess!
Hope this helps.
