Major problem here. I have a 97 4.6L 4x4, and I am getting about 8 mpg, on a good day. This sucks. I have a misfire on cylinder #1, and I know that has some part to do with it, but I wouldn't think that would cut my gas mileage in half! I am in fact a high school student, so my driving habits are more agressive than normal drivers, but my friend who drives more agressive than me still gets around 14 city. I got my air filter changed along with my oil last week. Somebody please help me.
The reason for the cylinder misfire is from the ignition system getting wet. The coil on #1 is bad and it needs a changin. But will i have to only change that one, or should i change all 8 to get all cylinders on the same level. btw - i belive the coils, spark plugs, and wires are all original and have been around for the trucks entire 116k mile long life.
It should have 2 coil packs not 8 coils. If it is a bad coil pack, just replace the bad one.
Put in new plugs and wires too and I bet it will run a lot better and get much better mileage.
Now I've got another question. How on earth do i replace the spark plugs?? I'd be pretty sure that there is another thread on it somewhere in FTE, so a just a link to the thread would be fine.
