Let Me start by saying hello. This is my first post.
I now own a 1997 Ranger supercab with the 2.3 and 5sp. It has 127300 miles on it. I have the opportunity to buy a 1989 F-150 xlt lariat. It has 180000 miles on it. I have heard it run and it runs well. No smoke. Body is in good shape too. I would have to sell My Ranger to buy it though. The guy is only asking 1500.00 for the F-150. The motor is the I-6. I think it was a 4.9, not sure.
I guess my question is, how long do these trucks usually last if well maintained? This truck will have to be an everyday driver. I drive about 30 miles each way for work alone. Sorry for the lenth.
It's a long lasting engine, one of Ford's best, and most last over 250k miles, all depends on how it was taken care of. I'd do a compression test and an oil pressure test to get an idea of what kind of condition the engine is in first. Have the truck checked out by a mechanic (I'm sure there are things that need to be replaced) unless you feel comfortable with your own inspection. They are reliable trucks so as long as it's in good working order I see no reason not to get it.
I'd definately go for the ford. awesome engine, nice looks. it's very sexy. I have one pretty similar, and I'm very pleased. it'd be worth your buck. Rangers are okay... but a good ol FIZO is nice to have. Sounds like a good deal too. don't be afraid of miles. Mustang was right. with the right TLC, it'll go at least another 100K
Thanks for the feedback. I am seriously leaning towards buying the F-150. The price is good, and I could use the extra cargo space. Anyone interested in buying a slightly used 1997 Ranger? HeHe.
