I've got a Motorcraft 2100 that is in need of replacing because the throttle body is starting to leak fuel around the throttle shaft and I think this vacuum leak causes my 400 to diesel.
I've got a spare 2100 that will need rebuilding but first I'd like to know how tight the throttle shaft needs to be. This one is fairly tight, but I can move the shaft side to side very slightly. The gap is less than the thickness of a single sheet of paper...we're talking slight. I popped the little red tube on a can of carb cleaner and pushed it against the throttle shaft, flush against the shaft's bore, and a little bit managed to come out the other side of the bore onto the throttle shaft when I sprayed. What do you all think?
I know there really shouldn't be any play at all...but I can't keep pulling carbs off junkyard motors or getting them off ebay until I find a completely tight one. And the odds of finding an old one with no wear are slim anyway.
I'd give it a shot. It shouldn't be leaking any fuel from the throttleshaft though, unless it is dripping gas into the carb when turned off. Float a little high or fuel perculating in the bowl.
I should have been a bit more specific about the fuel leakage...I had all the fast idle linkage off so I could see the bare shaft end, and when I pulled the throttle all the way back, the shaft bore seeped a bit of fuel. There isn't a continuous leak there or anything.
OK, the other one should be ok after installing an overhaul kit. A little play is acceptable.
Put the jets out of your carb into the one that you are putting on so it will run ok.
