Anybody know if there are any online places with an "exploded" view of a 400? I'm looking for one part in particular, and I'm not even sure what it's called. However, I can describe it. It is a pressed pipe fitting on the top of the block itself and is a water passage as it goes to the heater. Well, mine is missing out of my '71 400... rebuild. I tore it down so long ago, and it has since been rebuilt, now I have to get one. Perhaps make one????
This part has been discussed several times here and I believe some part numbers as well as some modifications have been listed. Maybe try "outlet fitting" as a search or somebody else may have a better term.
See, while I was away from my keyboard somebody came up with one
Carquest has it...CTC 278962 is the part number for a 400 engine if you don't want to go the tapping / threaded nipple route. It is 3/4" diameter, and has a flare on the hose end. If your heater core hoses are 5/8", you then need a short length of 3/4" heater hose, and a 3/4 to 5/8 adapter. Part number RBR 28611 is a plastic coupler that works just fine for that.
If you go to a Carquest, and ask to see a catalog, they also have a fitting that goes from 3/4 to 5/8, and has a flare on the 5/8 end as well. Don't have the part number on that one, but they can help you out.
By the way, when I searched for that part, I went everywhere else...several Ford dealers, AutoZone, Advanced Auto, Napa, etc., and they all looked at me like I was from another planet and told me to just tap it. Carquest tossed me the fitting catalog and there it was. Needless to say, I am happy with them, and go there almost exclusively now.
