fuel pumps

Has anyone successfully changed the fuel system to one that works !!
I don,t like having to guess how much fuel I have and how long the pumps will run and which tank will work today!!
Any help is appreciated.

The system that the ford trucks use is pretty good.

Why don't you tell us about the problem you're having?

I fill the back tank, but always run off front tank. Rear fills front!!
But, as front tank is getting empty, the gauge will bounce from its normally always on full reading to 1/4 tank. At this point, I switch to rear tank, which sometimes reads full , sometimes empty, sometimes in between. It runs poorly off this tank.
I then fill up rear again, but never needs more than 1/2 tank to fill!!
If I fill front tank, I get gas backing into rear tank.
I bought it used and it has done this to some degree since I got it.
It is an 88f150, 4.9.
As for ford not having problems with fuel system , a search of sites turns up loads of isues which is why I posted this question.I just would like to not worry about the gas . By the way, my 85 f150 gauge never read right either.
Thanks again for replies.

I have a 90 f150 5.8. Ran great gages fine, one day I found front tank gage will not display and started cross fueling to rear tank. So, I ran the truck on rear tank only till I could repair.
Research led to a tsb that said both pumps needed to be replaced to prevent cross fueling.
Before I could fix the truck it wouldn't start on either tank. I had to leave town unexpectedly so had towed to repair shop and they replaced "two BAD pumps". Picked up truck and ran great/gages fine. shut off truck then would not restart. Mechanic replaced fuel relay by air box but now:
will not power rear tank but rear tank displays the amount of fuel in rear tank.
will only run on front tank but will not display at all on fuel gage.
If I switch from front to rear while running it immediatley dies.

this recall was in 93....
See if the part of this thread about the recall sheds any light on your problem. I believe there was another post in the last day or so discusses this same problem with a little more detail. When I get home I will try to locate it and put up the link.

Here's the other thread that talks about the fuel cross over recall. Don't know if you ever had this done or not.

I am thinking about pulling everything out and putting inline fuel pump back by tank. I probably will go with one tank only if I can get gauge working somehow with an aftermarket item or something.
