With all the talk of putting on larger tires and lifts, do you really need to take the truck in and have the dealer reflash the computer to prevent odometer from reading wrong and causing computer problems? Or is this just another suggestion to get $75 from us? I have an 01 xlt screw 4x4 with 265/75/16 and plan on replacing with 285/75/16 soon.
Not to bud in,I have got a question for you Lxman1. I took my 03' into the dealer to have the speedo recalibrated and the term REFLASH was not mentioned. I have 285/75/16 tires and 4.10 gears, Stock was 255/70/16 tires and 3.55 gears. The dealer said they could only adjust the computer to specs and guidlines, which was 265/75/16 tires and 3.73 gearing, so my speedo is still off. I had posted this in the tranny forums and got some good info. but from what you said it can be done to any size Thanx Rich
We don't reflash, we adjust the tire size in the computer so it will calculate correctly. We sometimes have to figure out revolutions per mile to do so, so if they calculated wrong that may be why yours isn't correct.
this is true, they are adjustable because different trucks come with different size tires.
If you have the money, you can buy a programmer from Motorhaven and do it yourself.
You might also try another dealer, unless you talked to the actual tech, it has been my experience that most service writers do not know a lot about how cars function. Mine tried to tell me yesterday when I showed him my blown high pressure a/c line that I probably had a coolant leak because it was green. Once that I showed him that it was oily and hissing from rubbing against the fan shroud since it was built, and explainingthat the a/c was quick cycling, then he agreed that it was freon all over the place.
Anyway, talk to the tech that actually does the work, he/she probably knows how to do it.
Jimmy
Oh yeah, reflashing usually changes the timing and fuel mixture, idle speed, etc.
Thanx Lxman glad you got your a/c fixed This is the statement from the tech: "ATTEMPTED RECALIBRATE FOR NEW TIRE SIZE AND GEAR RATIO. GEAR RATIO NOT WITHIN CERTIFITED LIMITS, CAN ONLY USE RATIOS 3.29 AND 3.76. TIRE SIZE NOT WITHIN CERTIFIED LIMITS. TARGET RANDGE IS 653-727. RECALIBRATED TO MAXIMUIN 3.76 RATIO AND 275/70/16 TIRE SIZE" I don't know talking to the tech would help if the dealer has to stick to guidelines???? Rich
Well, if they won't do it, you can try the programmer or another dealer. 4.10 gears were an option, so it should be able to be reprogrammed for them I would think.
