Iac
On the 4.0, what initially causes the IAC to clog up, and how can it be prevented. Or, is it just something that has to be dealt with by buying a new one every few years or ever how often it clogs up?

You have to remember that dirty air can and does pass through it, and also because it is so close to the throttle body, it is exposed to exhaust gases etc. that are being recirculated back into the system vis a vis the TB vapor port. Not much you can do to ward off these things.

On yours, the IAC is in a fairly easily accesible place. Routine removal and cleaning with a TB cleaner would probably help extend the life. On 4 bangers the IAC is the on the back side of the TB in very close proximity to the firewall.
