code scanner for F250 7.3 diesel

Looking for advice
Hi,
My Ford randomly dies while driving.. It starts back up after I put the key to the off position and then back on. I suspect a sensor, But am lost as to where to look. I have owned this truck for approx 5 months. There is a performance(?) gadget mounted in the upper left part of the windshield That I don't know Jack about- .
Anyone here know anything about a scanner for a diesel? or can lead me in the right direction? thanks
