2001 Expedition Air Compressor

I'm hearing a weird humming noise everytime I get in and start the vehicle. I'm assuming it's the air compressor for the rear load leveling system. Is this what it's designed to do? Is something wrong with it? The humming noise sometimes takes place during driving also. I thought it was to adjust the height of the rear end when you were hauling something. Anyone have any info? Drop me a line.

'Humming' is normal. I have a '97 so I've listened to it for years...the owners manual gives more details about this but from what I remember reading the compressor starts when the car is turned on (if the door is shut), stops and holds whenever a door is opened, adjusts around 30 mph and for highway driving. Also adjusts sometimes after the car has been turned off for about 45 minutes. That noise from the garage had me worried for awhile!
