Points gap could be incorrect, and\or bad ignition timing for starters. Any other symptoms?

that's really the only problem. it started out occasionally, once a week and when it did it would only do it going up hills at hwy speed. and now it does in park when i give it just a little gas

even though it was backfiring if i gave it more gas it really tried to go. a friend of mne told me it could be trying to vapor lock, but the fuel filter was not real hot i could still touch it.

I am not familiar with aftermarket carbs and I hope someone else can explain how to fix this on your specific carb, but I am almost sure that it is an enrichment failure if you're sure the points and timing aren't wrong. Manifold vacuum decreases when you punch the throttle open and if you're carb doesn't rich the mixture, you will lean out and get a backfire.

If it were the stock carb, I would say its the power valve. That also explains why it got worse. One of those once-a-week backfires could have blown it out finally and gave you the problem you have now.

Have you tried the distributor cap and rotor? It sounds like crossfiring. At first it did it under load conditions, now there are tracks and it does it all the time.

thank you everyone for your advice. the cap and rotor was replaced..no change. i have a feeling it is some where in the carb. all there is, is process of elimination.
