I have a early '99 PSD which is stock except for an A-pillar guage set that I recently added. I am considering adding a Tymar intake and filter. While my wife has gotten use to the turbo sound, and doesn't complain nearly as much as she did when I got the truck 3 months ago, I was wondering if the Tymar intake is going to make the intake/turbo sound even more apparrent? I believe I have read that the turbo in the early '99s generates more turbo whine that later models. Does anyone know if this is true?
Thanks for the info. It does make a significant swoosh sound when shifting gears under hard acceleration (towing 10,000 pounds). Thanks for the quick responses.
Keep in mind that once you reach cruising speeds, even when towing, it won't whine that much because the boost will be a lot lower than when you are accelerating. You will hear the turbo more with any aftermarket air intake, so if you don't think your wife can handle it get her some earplugs (you didn't think I was going to say don't get the Tymar, did you?).
My boss has one of the first 99's that came out. We didn’t have much of an intake since most will not work....with the recent exception of the AFE stage II. What we did is pull an intake box from a 2000 plus and installed it. Then went to the Stage I. That truck has the noisiest turbo of any Power Stroke i have heard. Heck, just a stock intake was noisy. BUT to these ears….nothing sounds sweeter…….I think it had to do with the impeller wheel they used on that turbo. It basically is what Banks and others uses to lessen turbo surge. There’s a hint for yall…found that out last week. The blades are not all the same height. Some are tall and some aren’t. Helps with surge but not as efficient and a little more noisy! SO one might say that you could upgrade to the 2000+ wheel and gain performance, and less noise…..but more surge…….pick a poison!
