This truck just seems really slow. It has problems holding 55mph in OD on anything resembling a slope, and it doesn't really seem to want to accelerate. With an empty bed and nearly empty tanks, should I be able to smoke the rear tires? Or is this normal for a smogger 302?
I dont know about smoking the rear tires but the truck should do better than you are describing. Check for a clogged converter. also check your timing. I drove a 2wd 85 F150 with 3.55 gears open rear 302 EFI and it would spin tires from a stop. My 86 2wd F150 with a 3.08 rear 302 EFI C6 trans will chirp the tires when taking off from a stop sometimes. Runs really good on the highway.
