Transmission Options 81 F100

I have a 81 F100 That came with a 4.2 V8. The previous owner replaced it with a 302. I have the 4 speed floor shift tranny (4th being OD). The gear ratios between 2nd and 3rd are to far apart. Gota realy wind 2nd out before going to 3rd with any kind of load. Is there a 5 speed tranny out there that I could drop in that would give me a closer ratio and make it a little more driver friendly?

And what all manual trannys were used in these trucks?

A 5 speed OD should fit. Not sure of all mods needed but the shifter should come out the same hole in the floor. I had that trans in a 86 Bronco and I know the 2-3 shift you are talking about.

Yeah, you could drop a 5 speed in easily. You have your choice between the M5OD and the ZF 5 speed, I would go for the ZF 5 speed though.

The simplest way to tell the difference is the ribs on the side of the case, On a M5OD the ribs form squares, on the ZF they form diamonds. And you can always look at the data tag.
