Ok, I know my motor is in good shape. It runs nice and smooth and starts right up every day. Sometimes it doesn't even crank once over before the engine is already running.
I bought a vaccuum gauge to troubleshoot an EGR problem, and while I was under the hood, I decided to see what kind of vaccuum the motor is pulling. I hooked it up, and it's pulling 18.5". I know it's supposed to be steady in a healthy engine, but exactly how steady? Mine isn't 100% stable. It fluctuates up and down maybe .2" pretty randomly. Is this considered within normal parameters, or does it need to be 100% stable?
BTW, it's an '89 F-150 straight six, about 140k miles. Still runs like new!
I don't think .2'' flutter is a problem. Thats a small amount. I would think you would see dips much greater than that for sticking valve, or whatever. And the truck wouldn't be running perfect if it had a valve sticking. Also some gauges are less damped than others and might show the smallest flutter, where another might sit stable..MK
