Vaccuum hose routing 71 302ci, 2v autolite carb
Hello everyone,
I have a question regarding the vaccuum hose routing on my 71 F100. I bought the truck (not running) a couple of months ago. The engine has only three vaccuum lines that I have found and one of them dosen't seem to have a place to connect. There is no suction on the line and it runs along the left side of the carburator as looking at the truck from the front. The truck has a 302ci engine with an aftermarket autolite 2v carb. Please help!
Also does anyone know where I can get a shop manual for this truck? Haven't been able to round one up yet.
Any help will be greatly appreciated

There are a lot of shop manuals available right through this very web site. Go to the main page.

1. You can get a set of shop manuals from Walter Miller at www.autolit.com. The complete 5 volume set for my 1978 Ranchero cost me $80.00 and may be the best purchase I made.
2. I don't have any idea about the hose but if you can get a hold of a set of Mitchell's manuals you may be in luck. They make a set of books that cover the vacuum hose designs for just about everything made. My public library had a set so check there first.

Hi
This may be true but I doubt it because my 71 has three vaccuum hoses. One is connected to the vaccuum advance on the distributor, one is on the base of the 2v carb and the other is just dangling on top of the intake manifold. All of these hoses come from the back of the intake manifold from what I can tell.

It sounds like your vacuum is connected to the large plumbing adapter in the intake manifold behind the carb. At the base of teh carb is another vacuum source usually called "ported" vacuum. Therefore, if there is a line going to this connector at the base of the carb it is just plugging off that source. You obviously need a line to the distributor. The other line you have may have been for a vacuum operated air flapper in the original air cleaner snorkle. If you have the original air cleaner on there look at the snorkle end to see if there is a vacuum connection on it. If not you can plug that line off because I can't see any other location you need it from here.

There is a vacuum port just below the choke housing that is usually hooked up to your distributor. Now if you have a dual diaphragm distributor, there are two nipples on the vacuum can. The regular one is hooked up to the carb and the one closest to the dist. goes to a port on the manifold itself. This was an early form of pollution control. Some of those engines also had ported vacuum switches( a temperature operated valve with 2-3 vacuum ports that screwed into the manifold). If you have traced your lines back and can find none of this stuff, just take stockmans' advice and run the line from from carb to dist. and make sure the rest are plugged or removed.(golf tees work great).
