Hello to all! This is my first visit to this great forum. I've recently purchased a '66 F100 with a 352 that is shot. I need a recommendation for where to get a high quality replacement motor. I do not have the time (or the experience, frankly) to build the motor myself. I do not want to swap in a larger big block, and I don't think I want a "crate motor" unless someone can make a recommendation for where to get a "stock" 352 that isn't "hecho in mexico." There are not any (or any that I know of, anyway) good builders in my area. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
I do not have any experience with any of the builders out there but you can get one from ebay. There are a few vendors there. Also you have mass producers like jasper engines but their quality seems to be hit and miss. The best thing to do is find a good machinist and have him do it for you. We can give you the right questions to ask him! Where do you live?
You can scour the entire planet and you will not find a 352 that was hecho in mexico. Dearborn michigan is where it came from.
Thanks for the speedy advice. I live in Virginia Beach, VA. I don't know of a good machine shop around here. I've tried talking to the local hot rod and 4x4 shops without much success. I've gotten a few recommendations, but the quality seems hit or miss - no one shop stands out. I know exactly what you mean with companies like Jasper - seems smarter to me to spend a little more money for peace of mind. If anyone knows of a really good builder in their area (or a really good company) that is willing to crate up a motor and ship it - let me know.
I purchased a Japser engine Class II 390 320h.p/415lbs torque. This engines screams down the road, I have it in a 1975 4x4 pulling a 6000lb travel trailer. I am very, very happy with this set up. It has 9/1 CR, hypereuctic pistons molly rings, balanced, live tested, heavy duty rod bolts, stainless steel valves, torque plate honing ,deck all block, double roller timing chain ,high rev lifters, high volume oil pump and the cam is 214/int224/exh(510/int 536/exh). Al ittle over 3000.00. I almost bought a Recon engine rated 320hp/380# torque 2200.00.Auto care rebuilt engines 1500.00 with upgrades like doulble roller timing set, ARP rod bolts,High -volume oil pump and R.V. cam(204/214). I finally bought the Japser because at the time I had saved up the money(1 1/2yr later). Also the engine factory quoted me 2500.00 with some upgrades and they are very, very good. They even have turnkey engines at about 6000.to 7000.00. Good luck and go to their web sites. I found Jasper in this forum and started asking locally and every mechanic recommended them. Good luck and check whats out on the web. Also it matters were you live due to shipping. My jasper shipment was in the price. The engine factory is in Florida, they are good!!!
I went with MotorWorks out of Spokane, and its a solid, well built awesome running engine. They let me buy a 390 outright, and gave me full credit on my core, even though they new I was turning in a 360. Shipping was included, and got a complete, with all the tins, etc, for about 1850.00
15k miles later, and still no oil leaks, no smoke, and runs STRONG
I have a 352 in my 58 f100 that runs great. It would appear nearly stock But with 355s and a compound low 4 speed toploader it will hit 100mph in about 10 seconds. I was trying it out Shortly after I got it and snapped the drive shaft. I guess the tranny is not capable of 130+mph. The drive shaft broke the output shaft and I have not been able to afford a new tranny. I tried a tierd FMX but the engine tore it up. I would be willing to sell it to you but you would have to pay for shipping. It would come with the pertronics ignition but no carb. If your interested email me at jamesrowen71485@hotmail.com with price and return email info. Thanks
James
Sorry about my email dissapearing I'm very new to FTE and didn't know all the rules. Since I am so new I haven't sufficient posts to access other members profiles. So if you are interested in the motor and can access my profile email me with some kind of reply. If that doesn't work we can work out as much as possible on this thread while adhearing to the rules. Thanks again
James
Motor Works do make good engines and I forgot to mention them in my last post. They use brand name parts and have a very good machining. The engine is their Big Bore 390 9/1 CR, cam is 194/int 204/exh. It is rated at 300h.p/ 375torque. I still chose the Japser Class II because of the bigger cam, live testing and elctronically balanced.Good luck happy motoring
