Replaced starter one year ago -- how can I tell if the battery is dead - tried to jump start with jump it - won;t work - help please...
Hi and welcome to FTE
Do the trucks lights all work? If they dont then you might have a dead battery.
It does sound though like your starter is dead. Was the smoke from the starter?
You could crawl under the truck and take a look at the connections on the starter. Sometimes they corrode and fall off.
had a similar incident happen to myself, as it turned out the spade on the end of the positive cable going down to the starter has alot of exposed contact area, and from travelling rough roads or whatever it came loose and contacted the start terminal on the starter, only way to disengage it was to disconnect the battery, and then the starter let out alot of smoke and had to install a new one. i have also have had the positve cab rub through on the inner fender lining....that stumped me for a bit, but all is well now.
