2000 Excursion Questions

I have an opportunity to buy a 2000 Excursion Limited, 7.3l diesel, 40k miles. Appears to be driven easy and well maintained.

Any advice on what to look for? The miles are great but what should be expected from a 4yr old, heavy vehicle, esp. related to the shocks, front end components, 4wd, transmission, fuel system, etc?

Did the 2000 have any quirks? Anyone have mileage figures?

At 40k miles has the engine worn in enough to switch to Amsoil synthetic Heavy Duty Diesel oil?

I like my '01 5.4l Expedition but would trade up for more room and towing capability. I think my fuel costs would be the same or lowerwith the X. I do my own routine maintainance and would be looking for extended drain intervals with the synthetic.

Thanks in advance

Hey, I can't answer any of your questions, but I wanted to chime in and say I just purchased the same vehicle. However my Limited PSD Ex had 67K miles on it when I bought it last month.

So far, the best mileage I've gotten has been 14.6 MPG, combination highway/city (mostly city) but I'm convinced it will get better MPG on long haul trips. I'll find out next month when I drive up to Sacramento.

At a mere 40K miles you shouldn't have to much to worry about for a while, unless the 40K miles were used for city driving. Ball joints are the first concern as they can go out as early as 60K miles, my F250 lasted until 150K though. Front brakes and rotors are also prone to failure more often due to the 8K lbs. curb weight. Overall your cost of operation would be close to your Expy. The tranny should hold up for a while unless it was used for towing a lot and chipped and beat on.

I bought the same vehicle your looking at last November with 104K miles. The X now has 116K miles and has seen a best mpg of 19 on a 640 mile trip empty. The other day on a 45 mile drive the overhead read 23.8 mpg with a nice tail wind. On the average the fuel economy has been around 16 which is mostly 10 mile trips one way (wifes vehicle). The CPS failed a couple thousand miles ago and it was only $90 from International and a free ride from triple A. The ball joints must have been replaced along with the tires and brakes not to long ago because they seem brand new, perhaps prior to or at trade in time.

Since the X is basicly the exact same mechanicly as the Super Duty you don't have much to worry about the first year stuff due to the Super Duty's being out for almost two years prior to the X.
