WHAT"D I DO ?? spark plugs

buddy changed his spark plugs on 2001 sport 4.0 HO he bought platinum champions. ( which I don't like at all but.. ) he pulled the motormasters origionals out 110,000 km. He got 2 in and called for emergency assistance. I went over and got the other 4 in for him. fired it up runs like a bag of *(&*&^%&.

the origionals were .62 gap and we put in the news at .54 which i thought was factory, even says so on the engine label. Now I dont want to be pulling and putting them in 5 times to get it right because they are a pain in the *&$#@ like you all know. so do i put in the old ones and try it again to see if its the plugs or go for a whole new set of real plugs bosh platinums.

talk to me o mighty masses.

and yes i checked his first 2 he put in and found them all &^%$^%%^$ up so I had to fix em too.

I cant start till tommorrow so chat away and thanks in advance for your opinions

Need to make sure they gave you\him the right plugs. I put new plugs in my X and it ran like crap. Found out they gave me the wrong plugs. Both plugs look the same but they were not. On the gap go with whats under the hood.

the reason there such a bitch to get in and out is because the 4.0 has aluminum heads when they get hot they expand. make sure the engine is cold when you switch the plugs. or you will have more problems then you want to deal with. i reccommend buying OEM motorcraft plugs from a dealership. you cant go wrong there.

I agree, use Motorcraft plugs, then you are sure you have the right heat range plug. You may want to change out the plug wires. There is a good possibility the plug wires were damaged due to the physical abuse they went through changing the plugs.

I strongly suggest using anti-seize when putting the plugs in. If you make that a habit, you'll never have a problem pulling them out.

valid question, no spark plugs wires are not crossed. I think its just junk wall mart champion specials that are the cause. And taking them in and out wasnt the bitch I was reffering too. I was referring to the tight space to work in, and the engine was cold. Anti-seize is a good idea.

thanks everybody. I will be back soo with an update

yup all done, I went through the wheel wells put all new bosche platinums in at .54 gap and viola runs like a kitty cat. thanks for all the pointers. If I would have done it from the start and not half way through I think this would not have happened.

So I can make fun of my friend for a while and tell him never to touch his truck again with out me around .

cheers everyone

Hate to tell you this but I've had a run of bad luck with Bosch plugs...

In my '93 Ranger the electrodes were eroded after only 30k miles. I was told it's because the distributorless ignition puts out way more spark than the igniton's of previous years. Don't know if it's true but I now put motorcraft in all my Fords.

shhhhhhhhhh.

don't say that. I am running them in my 91 explorer and my 95 areostar with no problems so far. had em in for a couple of years now and they are still running strong.
when I picked these up I was told the gap was only 44. This was the first time in over 10 years that I had to regap a plug. So maybe they were gaped wrong.

thanks for the advice

mike 968 you are correct most if not all DIS system are high output and there only getting stronger. keep with the motorcraft they wont fail you. for example your standard funny lookin hybrid is generating enough power to basically weld your feet to the floor.

LOTR-HAMMER go with motorcraft trust me dont by in to bosch's hype

Antisieze is not a good idea on plugs, a spark plug needs a good ground contact to work correctly. I have had several problems due to antisieze on the plugs and no proper ground which results in low spark or none at all!
